PTSC MEMBERS GET $60,000 SPEECH FROM NIDO QUBEIN

At the December 10th meeting of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club held at the Slane Center of High Point University, members of our club were treated with the wonderful words of High Point University President and World-Renowned Speaker (who purportedly receives around $60,000 per speech), Dr. Nido Qubein.

Within just the first few sentences of when he began talking, everyone in attendance knew that this man has a passion for creating a one of the finest, the most open-minded, and the most student-friendly universities in the country. According to Dr. Qubein, "We pay close attention to the students and focus our efforts on making their experience here a positive one. We talk about God and country on this campus, and the students are our partners in this. The development of the human heart is of utmost importance!"

Dr. Qubein also spoke about the $100,000,000 that had been committed to be spent at the university over the next few years. Extensive construction projects were very apparent to our members who had to traverse the maze of walkways and scaffolding surrounding the Slane Center for the luncheon speech.

Those of us in attendance also know why High Point Mens' Basketball Coach Bart Lundy had the opportunity to get a $100,000 bonus if he defeated Carolina in their upcoming game, only to fall a "few" baskets short. To find out how this happened, asked someone who was there.

To end the meeting, both Coach Lundy and Womens' Basketball Coach Tooey Loy gave the audience a brief overview of their teams and a synopsis of the start of their respective seasons.

JANUARY MEETING TO VICTORY JUNCTION CANCELLED

Due to the snow and freezing rain on the day of the event, the meeting at Victory Junction Camp for Kids was cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

BASKETBALL COACHES SPEAK AT LUNCHEON

Men's basketball coaches from eight colleges in the Piedmont Triad region addressed club members and their guests at a luncheon in the Airport Marriott Hotel on November 2nd. Approximately two weeks after beginning formal practices, the coaches assessed their prospects for the season ahead while offering humorous comments with their audience and expressing unanimous concern about the difficult schedules that each of their teams will face during the 2006-07 campaign.

The club was honored to welcome head coaches Skip Prosser of Wake Forest University, Mike Dement of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Ernie Nestor of Elon University, Jerry Eaves of North Carolina A&T State University, Brian Galuski of Greensboro College, and Bobby Collins of Winston-Salem State University. Matt Parke, an assistant at Guilford College, represented head coach Tom Palombo. Josh Schertz, the associate head coach at High Point University, filled in for head coach Bart Lundy.

Our members wish each of these fine men much success throughout the season ahead.

PTSC PUZZLERS:

As Wake Forest fans celebrate their school's second Atlantic Coast Conference football championship, many of them have recalled the 1970 season when the Deacons won their first ACC title. Six players on Wake Forest's 1970 team were named to the All-Conference team by the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers (1st, 2nd, or 3rd team). How many of the six can you name?

(The answer may be found below, following the "Editor's View")

EDITOR'S VIEW, by Francis Kinlaw:(-and secretly edited by Gil Vaughan without consent)

Now that the holiday season has passed and all club members engaged in the selection of gifts for those that we think about often. And, since the following people are frequently on the minds of sports fans in this region of the country, the following gifts might have been appropriate for the individuals listed:

Skip Prosser - A quality point guard who will distribute the basketball to the right person at the right time;

Mike Krzyzewski - A sufficient number of blue-chip players to offset the supply that Roy Williams has accumulated in Chapel Hill; (so he misses J.J., but his remaining players aren't exactly "recruiters' cast-offs"! Mike Dement might trade a couple of players with Coach K!)

Roy Williams - The ability to distribute playing time among so many talented players, as well as the persuasiveness to convince several of them to sit willingly on his bench; (a couple of "consistent" 3-point shooters might help!)

Sidney Lowe - Success in his attempts to keep pace with the never-ending and effective recruiting that is conducted by his new peers, Krzyzewski and Williams; (as of the posting date of this newsletter, Sidney Lowe has solidified his contract for at least ten more years by upsetting the Tarheels!)

Jim Grobe - A 2007 football season as exciting and successful as the incredible 2006 campaign;

Ted Roof - At least a couple of victories on the field in 2007, and a continuing acceptance by the Duke University community of losing seasons; (heck, at basketball-minded Duke, if he just wins half of his games, he'll stay there forever!)

John Bunting and Chuck Amato - Success and happiness following several stressful seasons as head coaches at their respective institutions;

Butch Davis - A capability to coexist with traditionalists in Chapel Hill who demand success on the football field while expecting every action by a football coach to reflect the nebulous "Carolina Way"; (ditto for Davis as for Ted Roof above, but throw in one more game so it's a winning season and he can be Tarheel football coach for life!)

Dick Baddour - Relief from nearly annual controversies regarding the status of football and/or basketball coaches;

Mike Dement - A few players to complement impressive forward Kyle Hines in the UNCG line-up; (maybe a couple of those "cast-offs" from Coach K's squad!)

Donald Moore - Another year during which thousands and thousands of fans swarm through the gates of First Horizon Park, preferably to observe a Grasshoppers' team that is more competitive in the South Atlantic League standings than the clubs of the last few years; (who cares how many games they win, it's just great being out there amongst the crowd!)

The coaches at North Carolina A&T, Elon, Guilford College, Greensboro College, High Point University, and Winston-Salem State - Increased support for their hoop programs despite the lingering presence of ACC basketball and its overbearing television contracts. (Amen Brother!)

And, to all members of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club and their families - Have a wonderful and blessed 2007!

WARTHOGS AND GRASSHOPPERS MEET IN WINSTON-SALEM

The Winston-Salem Warthogs and the Greensboro Grasshoppers will not meet on the field of Ernie Shore Stadium in the foreseeable future but, on June 8th, top executives and field managers of the two franchises did discuss many aspects of their respective operations while only a short distance from that venue. Before a large gathering of members and guests of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club in a meeting room of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, representatives of the two organizations provided fascinating insights into many on-the-field and commercial facets of their professions. Interesting comments were offered by Donald Moore (general manager of the Grasshoppers), Brandon Hyde (field manager of the Grasshoppers), Guy Schuman (president of the Warthogs), and Rafael Santana (field manager of the Warthogs). After the four speakers had addressed a very wide variety of topics and made perceptive comments about the business climate in which they function as well as the development of young baseball players, a lively question-and-answer session provided those in attendance an opportunity to obtain additional information about specific subjects.

The club wishes to express its gratitude to the staff of the Joel Coliseum for its hospitality at this meeting. All who were present enjoyed delicious food and good fellowship in a very pleasant setting.

Rafael Santana, the manager of the Winston-Salem Warthogs, addressed the Piedmont Triad Sports Club at its last meeting. Santana is best known as the starting shortstop for the New York Mets during their championship season of 1986. Test your knowledge and recollection of the Mets' memorable World Series against the Boston Red Sox by attempting to answer these challenging questions about the critical sixth game of the 1986 "Fall Classic":

  1. Name the Boston outfielder who snapped a 3-3 tie in the top of the tenth inning with a leadoff home run off of Mets hurler Rick Aguilera.

  2. Name the Mets' catcher who kept New York's faint hopes for victory alive by lining a single to centerfield off of Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi after the first two batters in the inning --- Wally Backman and Keith Hernandez --- had been retired on fly balls.

  3. Who was pitching for the Red Sox when Mookie Wilson hit the infamous ground ball that went through Bill Buckner's legs to give the Mets a 6-5 victory?

  4. Name the managers of the Red Sox and Mets in 1986.

EDITOR'S VIEW, by Francis Kinlaw:

Although temperatures in our region of the country are hovering around 90 degrees on most days, let us take note of the social significance of the National Hockey League season that just concluded. Even members of the PTSC who follow sports regularly could not have imagined in the autumn of 2005 that the Carolina Hurricanes would capture the Stanley Cup in the early summer of 2006, or that Hurricanes hockey would be a prime topic of conversation throughout North Carolina as the major league baseball season entered its third month. A club member commented not long ago that he did not understand the rules of hockey and did not have much interest in the sport. But he now wonders whether he will soon be converted into a "Caniac" and live the remainder of his life watching a sport that he had ignored until he was a senior citizen.

The future of big-time professional hockey in North Carolina rests on the reactions of this man, others of his generation, and fans much younger in age. We have recently seen the Hurricanes ignite the imagination and enthusiasm of people who seek entertainment and wish to identify with a winning organization. The recipe for continued success by the franchise must include a tradition of competitive teams and the building of a fan base that will accept occasional disappointments along with victories. It will indeed be fascinating to look back in a decade and observe whether North Carolinians in general and sports fans in particular have become more attached to the traditions of hockey. Will the day ever come when large numbers of sports fans will utilize their remote controls to switch back and forth between telecasts of Hurricanes game and ACC basketball contests? Perhaps not, but the possibility of a "hockey revolution" does seem much more likely than it did just a few short months ago.

PTSC NEWSLETTER VOLUME 5, ISSUE #1, FEB. 2006

PTSC MEMBERS TOUR FACILITY OF BILL DAVIS RACING

Approximately 70 members and guests of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club enjoyed a delicious meal in the Nextel Cup Room of Bill Davis Racing in High Point on February 7th before hearing informative comments from Gail Davis (wife of owner Bill Davis) and driver Dave Blaney. Following the luncheon, the group was guided on a fascinating tour of the impressive 200,000 square-foot facility by Gray Warren, a supervisor of racing operations.

Mr. Warren explained that nearly 50% of the company's workforce of 200 people would be Bill Davis Racingdeparting within days for Daytona Beach, Florida to support the racing team's efforts to win the Daytona 500 as well as other competitions that are held in conjunction with it. Fifty-nine of those employees will be involved primarily with two cars (the NAPA Dodge Charger driven by Michael Waltrip and the Caterpillar Dodge Charger driven by Blaney) that will be entered in the big race, and more than 40 people are assigned to teams participating in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The logistics of transferring so much manpower to Daytona --- and providing for their food and lodging --- is just one aspect of an expensive, complex, emotionally draining, and technically demanding business operation.

In order to function effectively and efficiently, Bill Davis Racing maintains a fleet of three 30-seat airplanes near Piedmont Triad International Airport and utilizes the latest scientific research in fields such as aerodynamics. When Mr. Warren's referred to his staff's use of a NASA manual in designing a race car, one of his many interested listeners voiced the thoughts of many in the audience. Said the PTSC member, "This sport no longer bears any resemblance whatsoever to the Dukes of Hazzard!"

With the annual case of March Madness about to inflict almost --- if not all --- members of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club, college basketball is the subject of this edition's set of trivia questions. How many of these five questions can you answer?

  1. Two players have scored 50 or more points for Wake Forest in basketball. Who are they?
  2. Who led Wake Forest in both scoring and rebounding in Coach Bones McKinney's first two seasons as head coach of the Deacons?
  3. What was the first year that two Wake Forest players were named first-team All-ACC, and who were the players?
  4. Art Heyman led Duke's team in both scoring and rebounding in all three of his varsity seasons (1960-61 thru 1962-63). What other Blue Devil led his team in both categories in each of his three years of action?
  5. Which Blue Devil player led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounding twice during the Vic Bubas era at Duke?
EDITOR'S VIEW by Francis Kinlaw:

Both sports enthusiasts and proponents of economic development received a major shot of good news in late January with the announcement that the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro (albeit with a new name and sponsor) will gain more significance in 2007 as the PGA Tour adopts a new format. Many people in the Piedmont Triad --- from Tournament Chairman Mark Brazil to some members of our own sports club --- are to be congratulated for generating a successful effort in the face of severe challenges from other communities. As the newly structured board of directors for the tournament fulfills its intention to market the event at Forest Oaks Country Club on a broader scope geographically, golf fans and business interests can look forward to several years of notice from sponsors, visiting fans, and presumably at least one television network.

This is, however, an appropriate time to remind ourselves that the status of this sporting jewel is in question after the year 2010, and that we should continue to work individually and collectively to ensure the viability of the tournament. Volunteers will undoubtedly be welcomed by Mr. Brazil and his staff in the months prior to each of the next five tournaments, and each member of the Piedmont Triad Sports Club possesses skills that can be used to bring revenue to local charities and positive publicity to our region of North Carolina.

PTSC PUZZLER ANSWERS:

  1. Len Chappell, 50 vs. Virginia (1961-62), and Charlie Davis, 51 vs. American University (1968-89)
  2. Dave Budd in 1957-58 and 1958-59
  3. 1956-57, Jackie Murdock and Jack Williams
  4. Randy Denton, 1968-69 thru 1970-71
  5. Mike Lewis averaged 11 rebounds per game in 1965-66 and 14.4 rebounds per game in 1966-67.
Annual membership fee to join the Piedmont Triad Sports Club is $25. Contact Elizabeth Colamarino (Greensboro) at 433-7261 or George Boss (Winston-Salem) at 659-1200 for more information about membership.
